Enablers United is a Trust that has been active for  humanitarian and animal welfare services for the past 4 years. The goal is to help people from the lower socioeconomic background in rural and urban Karnataka, and to help as many animals as possible with food, healthcare and adoption facilities.

In lieu of COVID-19 the work we do has become all the more important as there are thousands of daily wagers, migrant workers and stray animals who are struggling without basic amenities. Our aim is to help them the best way we can. Since the announcement of the lockdown we have been actively engaging with other NGOs and police personnel to provide people from different parts of Karnataka with packed meals. Our main focus at the moment is providing some areas with ration kits – one that by our estimate should help them till 24 May 2020 at the very least. Our priority is to have them delivered to migrant workers living in tents, migrant workers living in slums, and daily wage labourers. We are also ensuring that as many stray animals – mostly dogs and cats who rely on food we leave as excess for their sustenance – are fed.

There are thousands and thousands of workers in Karnataka alone who are struggling during this lockdown and it is imperative that they are taken care of. Our goal has always been to help people with food and medical services, this is a time where this help is all the more crucial. Our primary goal now is getting ration kits to as many families as possible – first to migrant workers living in sheds or tents and then to those in slums, followed by auto drivers, construction workers. We have two categories of kits- one for people with ration cards and one for those without.  Our ration kits have aata, rice, tuar daal, oil, black gram, horse gram, salt, sugar, turmeric, dhaniya powder, sambar powder, onion, potato, bathing soap and soap to wash clothes. Each kits weighs 13kgs.

Over the past weeks we have distributed over 60,000 meals and 4,500 ration kits in rural and urban Karnataka. 10,000 animals have been fed as well. The packed meals have been distributed in Hulimavu, Anekal, Begur Road, Bannerghatta road, Sarjapur, Tilak Nagar, Jigni and KR Puram. We have distributed ration kits in Akshayanagar, Begur Road, Bidadi, Summanahalli, Tilak Nagar, Sarjapur, Jigni, SG Palya, Kumaraswamy Layout and Malleshwaram.

Our team, at the moment, consists of 31 people. We have 14 volunteers who are involved in the supervision, coordination and packing of the material. We have 11 paid migrant workers who take part in the packing and distribution processes, and another 6 who are our drivers and distributors of the packages, who based on the vehicle they drive distribute between 200 and 400 ration kits a day. All precautions to ensure safety are maintained. Our field volunteers wear full protective gear including goggles, masks, PPE suits, surgical gloves and constantly use hand sanitizer. Our kitchen and areas where the food is packed and stored are constantly and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. A constant temperature check of our volunteers and field workers is done as a precaution.

As of 3 May 2020, over 6,000 ration kits, 70,000 food packets and 14,000 animal meals have been distributed. Everyday the number of requests for ration kits from different parts of the city increases. With additional resources we can help bridge this gap. Enablers United will be focusing on providing ration kits till the end of the lockdown and for longer if required.
